Sideburn Records is proud to release Tommy Womack's third solo album. "Circus Town" is Womack's most diverse work to date. Songs such as "We Can't Do This Anymore," "Nancy Dunn" and the title cut appeal to the ballad fan, while "You Could Be at the Beach Right Now, Little Girl" is another of Womack's trademark hard-luck character studies. The rockers "My Name is Mud" and "You Can't Get There From Here" speak to the inner truck driver in us all.

Womack recorded and co-produced "Circus Town" with David Henry (Josh Rouse, Cowboy Junkies, Guster) over several months in 2001. And while several accomplished past associates make appearances (Brad Jones, Will Kimbrough, Fenner Castner, David Jacques, Will Rigby, Bill Lloyd, Ken McMahan, Ross Rice, Lisa Oliver Gray and Ned Henry), most of the record is Womack this time. It sounds a little like the Clash in places, a little like Train in others, but mainly it sounds like Tommy Womack.

Womack has made a habit of one-upping himself. His 1998 Checkered Past release, "Positively Na-Na" was followed by his 2000 Sideburn Records release, "Stubborn." Both critically acclaimed albums combined elements of hillbilly, soul, blues and country, all mixed with American rock and roll. After 15 years (with post-punkers Government Cheese and later the power-pop Bis-quits), Womack has long been a local favorite in the Nashville musical community. He thought his 1995 book, "Cheese Chronicles: The True Story of a Rock N Roll Band You've Never Heard Of," would be his swan song to the music business. Instead, it started a solo career that has garnered both critical acclaim and a national fan base.

Here it is. Stubborn, from Tommy Womack on Sideburn Records. We're really honored to have the opportunity to tell you about this stunning collection of suburban dustbowl ballads, flat out rockers, Beefheart-like jazz rants, and classic rock tunes.

A 37 year old rocker/author/dad who wasn't listening when "they" said rock was dead, Womack populated his latest record with a stubborn bunch of characters, some you may be familiar with, others who you'd know if you met 'em. And it's not just the folks in the songs who are stubborn, it's the folks on the record. Uncompromising artists like Dan Baird (Georgia Satellites) and Jason Ringenberg (Jason and the Scorchers) join Womack on this album. Ace players Al Perkins (Gram Parsons and just about everyone else), George Bradfute (Webb Wilder, Mark Germino), Will Kimbrough (Will and the Bushmen, the bis-quits, Kim Richey, Matthew Ryan, Josh Rouse, Jeff Black), Mike Grimes (the bis-quits, Garrison Starr, Bare Jr.), Ross Rice (Human Radio) all bring their inestimable talents to the table. Producers Brad Jones (Marshall Crenshaw, Jill Sobule, Steve Earle, Jump, Little Children) and Robin Eaton (Vince Bell), also known for their musical integrity and talent, are on board again for Stubborn, Womack's second solo effort.

And, who better to put this out than Sideburn Records, a label out of Portland, Oregon. Run by the folks from Music Millennium and Burnside Records, they've been turning the Pacific Northwest on to great roots and blues music for years. It's their hope, and ours at the Press Network, that Stubborn gets under your skin as much as it has ours.
